St. George Cathedral
St. George Cathedral
Danivka is a village (965 residents), Kozelets Region, on the left bank of Oster River. It is known from 1746, when across the river the Kozelets St. George Monastery was founded; in 1775, its main St. George Cathedral was erected. He is one of the best Ukrainian samples of three-domed church having four internal pillars and rectangular plan. The cathedral was decorated with incredibly elaborate polychrome stucco in an infinite variety of forms—plants, heads of allegoric figures, military symbols, and coats-of-arms. Time did not spare the monastery. The four-tier belltower disappeared. The cathedral was damaged during the Great Patriotic war. Later it was repaired and used as an abode for elderly singles. First nuns returned here a decade ago; they did their best to revive the St George Convent. A unique birch at the bend of motorway reminds of the difficult fate of the monastery. Many years ago, a power line split the tree in two but it still strives to survive.
