Fastiv

The Orthodox Church of the Patronage
The Orthodox Church of the Patronage
It is an oblast town (49,500 residents), center of the region, located on the steep banksof Unava. For the first time Fastiv (or Khvastiv) was mentioned in 1390. Early in the 15th c. the inhabitants abandoned it driven away by frequent raids of Tatars. In 1568 the revived settlement became a Catholic patrimony. Early in the 17thc. Fastiv becomes the residence of bishops; in 1612 the Jesuit College was inaugurated, and in 1638 the Bernardine monastery was founded. In the 17th and 18thc. the frontier town of Fastiv suffered a lot during permanent armed conflicts between Rzeczpospolita and Russian Empire. In the late 18th c. the Polish domination ceased. Symbolically, Fastiv retained wonderful samples of buildings for public worship belonging to Catholic and Orthodox churches striving to control mentality, souls and money of the townspeople. The Orthodox Church of the Patronage (1779-1781) boasts harmonious proportions and perfect forms; it is the masterpiece of Ukrainian wooden architecture. It has been recently restored, and only the old belltower reminds of its age. The Roman Catholic Church is no less wonderful (1903-1911, architect V. Dombrowski); it is a sample of retrospective architecture of the early 20th c. Nearby there is a building of Catholic seminary under reconstruction.
