 Horodnia. At the monument to Taras Shevchenko. | Horodnia (13,300 residents) is a regional center located on the banks Chebrizh River. Gentry Khvoshch founded the Horodnia Hamlet in Rzeczpospolita in 1629- Later, under Muscovy (1654), Horodnia was a part of Sedniv Sotnta; during the Northern War (1705) it became an independent sotnia township. Because of this war, there appeared an unusual monument in a city, the real or legendary background of which is as follows. In 1709, during Swedish-Russian war, Russian Emperor Peter the Great marked his birthday here and presented three cast-iron cannons to his hosts. There is a relevant inscription on the monument erected in 1888. In 1782, Horodnia became a district town of Chernihiv governance, and got the Magdeburg right in three years. The Horodnia memorials include the St. Nicholas Church (19th c), monument (1903) on the grave of Ukrainian ethnographer and folklorist S. Nis and monument to T. Shevchenko (1982), who visited the city in 1846. |
