Kozelets. The house of regimental office | Kozelets is a regional center (8,300 residents) on the banks of Oster River. For the first time it was recorded in the 15 th c. In the days of the regimental division of Ukraine Kozelets became the center of Kyiv regiment. The house of regimental office, designed by architect A. Kvasov in 1740-1760, has been preserved until now. The main Kozelets architectural memorial dominates the landscape: the majestic Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God with a belltower. Architects of I. Hryhorovych-Barsky and I. Kvasov built the cathedral after the design of prominent V.Rastrelli in 1752-1766. Illiterate Kozak woman N. Rozumykha that due to her children and as the fates decreed became a countess Rozumovska and lady-in-waiting at Russian court initiated the construction. The splendid and beautiful Kozelets cathedral is the best of its kind among buildings for public worship at home and in Russia in the mid-18th c. Its wonderful interior is a unity of architecture, sculpture and painting. Its grandiose seven-tier fretted and gilded iconostasis is the center of composition. Court artist H.Stetsenko decorated the cathedral and iconostasis, S.Shalmatov executed carvings. In Kozelets there are two more notable Orthodox churches of the 18th c.: functional St. Nicholas Church (1745) and Church of the Ascension (1772). The manor ensemble of the 18th c, comprising main wooden house, stone house and a wing is also worthy of notice. |
