Luhans'k is a city and regional centre on the Olkhovka and Luhan rivers. There is a railway and highway junction. Its population is 504,000 inhabitants. In 1795 on the site of present-day Luhans'k there was a cannon foundry which supplied the demands of the Black Sea.
In 1882 Selyshche, Kamyany Brid and neighbouring settlements, joined to create the city of Luhans'k.
Its name changed several times: 1935-58 it was Voroshylovhrad; in 1958-70 Luhans'k; in 1970-90 — Voroshylovhrad; in 1990 it reverted to its former histories name.
