Mezhyrich

The Dormition Cathedral
The Dormition Cathedral
Mezhyrich Village (1,900 residents), Lebedyn Region, looks like an 8 km horseshoe at the foot of steep creeping slopes of the right bank of Psel River. The migrant Right-Bank Kozaks founded the village on site of Horodets fortified settlement in 1642. They built a fortress with watchtowers to protect it against the raids of Crimean Tatars. In 1658, Mezhyrich became a sotnia town of Sumy regiment At the turn of the 17th and 18th c, there were eight churches and the monastery of Precursor in the village. Now there is only the Dormition Cathedral (1759-1775) built by the archimandrite of the Kyiv Caves Monastery L Bilous. Mezhyrich lost its defensive-boundary function, when the raids of Crimean Tatars stopped and the regimental administrative-territorial division of I^ft-Bank Ukraine expired. The township degraded into a typical picturesque village. From the high falcate steep slope of the very wide valley of Psel one can see a charming Ukrainian landscape combining the village, floodplain, and river.
