The five-dome Orthodox St. Michael Church
The five-dome Orthodox St. Michael Church
Olevsk (10,300 residents) is a district center on the slopes of Ubort River Valley. For the first time Olevsk was recorded in 1488 in connection with the petition of boyar Pyrkhaylo to Kyiv voevode. At the beginning of the 16th c. the settlement was controlled by Ovruch Castle, and for a long time after the Union of Lublin (1569) it was owned by magnates Nemyrychis. Despite the Magdeburg right granted by the Polish King in 1641, Olevsk failed to become a major city. The five-dome Orthodox St. Michael Church is the only unique landmark of the time (1596). It the oldest building for public worship in the oblast (without taking into account the continuously reconstructed Kyivan Rus church in Ovruch). The church is miraculously buried in verdure on the central square of Olevsk.
