"Sophia" Park in Uman
The park was laid in 1796 by a reach magnate, Stanislav Pototsky for his wife, Sophia, and was presented to her on her birthday, in 1802. The idea to create the park in the romantic style using Greek and Roman mythology belongs to Sophia.
More than 200 years the park stuns the visitors by its beauty: wonderful landscapes, exotic flowers and trees, antique buildings, ponds, waterfalls - all these you can contemplate while visiting the park.
Only due to the gratis labor of a huge number of bondmen it was possible so quickly to create the ensemble with intricate waterworks, arrangement of gross stones, planting of mature imported trees.
There was the river Bagno flowing in a picturesque area of Kamenka in the woodless valley. The surrounding landscape perfectly describes the name of this area – far and wide one can see rocks and crags hulking up everywhere. This very particularity predestinated the unique image of the park. Local stone was widely used for the erection of bridges, dams and sluices and also for the building of sculpture plinths. Fabulous grottos and startling waterfalls, majestic ponds and fountains – all these structures were stone-made. At great depth there was the gallery for the underground river Styx carved out; moreover, there was the sea-floor of the Dead Sea cut out and other constructions reproducing the well-known mythological plots built.
Invisible gurgling brooks are flowing among the stones. Fantastic Valley of Giants was created out of stone with randomly scattered colossal boulders and chips of the rocks. At the same time with the stone shifting inside the park the places for picturesque glades were cleared, and shortly afterwards deciduous and coniferous trees, decorative bushes were planted out.
The park is stretched on the area of 154,7 hectares with more than two thousand kinds of plants growing there. It is amazing that “Sofievka” has become famous not only all over the world, but also in the Universe: in 1984 planet 2259, opened by the Soviet astronomer Burnashevoj on June, 19th, 1971, has received the name “Sofievka” in honor of Dendrology Park.
No doubt, “Sofievka” looks amazing at any time of the year: in spring it is flowering, it blossoms in summer heat, sparkling in the gold of autumn, and it rests in winter silence.
…Heaps of boulders, the water falling from heights or easy proceeding in stone gallery, cool twilight grottoes, stone and trailing bridges, cascades, a marble sculpture - here that arsenal of means, which builders of park use to make impression of a “miracle “. Park is the product of landscape gardening art outstanding on beauty, skill and technical perfection of flora and fauna areas all over Ukraine. It is the place ideal for meditation and contemplation and sometimes it seems as if it exists separately of the world we live in – for it to be so airy and dreamlike!
